FDA Approves Qualified Health Claim for Chromium.

Purchase, N.Y.—The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved one qualified health claim from a petition filed by nutrition 21 for Chromium Picolinate and decreased risk of insulin resistance and diabetes; the agency also deemed the supplement safe for uses covered by the claim. The decision on the petition as initially slated for July 2004, but the FDA delayed is decision several times.

FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Nutrition (CFSAN) detailed its finding of credible evidence to support the health claim: “One small study suggests that chromium Picolinate may reduce the risk of insulin resistance, and therefore possibly may reduce the risk of Type II diabetes. FDA concludes, however, that the existence of such a relationship or type II diabetes is highly uncertain.”
